Writings
Protestants use the term apocryphal to name books that were
included in the Old Testament of the Septuagint but not in the Old
Testament of the Masoretic Text.
If we pick up the Protestant Bible, we notice 66 books. Precisely 39
from the Old Testament and 27 from the New Testament. What
most people miss is that there are other books in the Old Testament.
We are talking about the so-called apocryphal, deuterocanonical
books.
Apocryphal means hidden , not in a negative sense as one might
think but in the strict definition of secondary . Protestants did not
remove these books from their Bibles but removed them from their
classical Old Testament position and placed them in a separate
section between the Old and New Testaments. They called this
section the Apocryphal books because of their dubious
canonicity.
Apocryphal is a term used mostly by Protestants, while Roman
Catholics call these books deuterocanonical, that is, secondary
canon precisely. Let us then emphasize that the Apocrypha were
not excommunicated from the King James Version of the Bible or
any other Protestant Bible of the Reformation era. The Septuagint,
on the other hand, is a Greek translation of the Old Testament
