Reviews of The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho
Reviews were completed following the general practice of WCPS for
selection of novels for whole-group instruction. The Supervisor of
English/Language Arts provided copies of the book to a variety of
readers representing English teachers, students, and parents. The
reviewers were unanimous in their recommendation that the book be
presented to the Curriculum Council and the Board of Education for use
in English classrooms. Comments from the readers are below:
Students
1. Sends a great message. I think that so many students spend time fulfilling their parents or
somebody else’s wishes. This book let’s them reflect on their own goals and see what is best for
them.
2. It is very motivating. Shows you that you can’t let obstacles define you and that it is okay to
be unsure at times. Encourages you to just explore yourself and not fight your feelings.
3. The main character is extremely relatable. He is not a god or a superstar human. He is a lone
traveler that represents the reader’s path in life. Reading this before college is a great time to
understand what’s awaiting in life.
This is a great story about finding yourself, and learning how to be more self confident and
reliant on yourself. I think this book really can teach the reader a lot about the world and how
one perceives it. I read this book very recently for English, and I recommend everyone to read it
at least once, since it really opens the mind into a new perspective of controlling your own fate
and pursuing your dreams or "personal legend."
It has a relatable main character that keeps the reader interested. It's an
exciting journey. Overall a good book.
Parents
1. Having the possibility of realizing your dream 2. Trials and difficult times should not deter
someone from continuing to strive for their personal legend. 3. Staying true to yourself and
others can lead to rewards that are not always monetary.
It is inspiring.
It is beautifully written.
It allows for exploration of multiple themes relevant to high school students, and is relatively
short, so students will not be intimidated by length, and it won’t take so long that it
interferes with covering other components of the course.
Appropriate for all ages; content could span disciplinary areas; the book was written by
someone outside the U.S. and it's important to expose children to international authors.
