THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING
GOD | THEMES
A Thematic Study of Zora Neale Hurston's Classic
Language and the Power of Voice
Central to Janie’s development is her journey toward finding her "voice."
In the novel, speech is not just communication; it is a mark of identity
and empowerment. Hurston uses a blend of high-literary narration and
rich Southern Black vernacular to show the transition of Janie from a
silenced observer to a storyteller of her own life.
"She had come back from the burial of wanting possibilities. She had been
to the horizon and back and now she was sitting there in the echoing
house with the spirit of a watchman."
From Silence to Power: Under Joe Starks, Janie is suppressed; Joe
refuses to let her speak in public because "she’s a woman." Her growth is
marked by the moment she finally talks back to him, "stripping him of
his masculinity" with her words. By the end of the novel, her ability to
tell her story to Pheoby represents her ultimate self-possession.
The Search for Self-Fulfillment
Janie spends the novel pursuing her own vision of life, represented by
the recurring symbols of the Pear Tree and the Horizon. While Nanny
(her grandmother) values security and "sitting on high," Janie seeks a
marriage that is a reciprocal "bee to a blossom."

The Three Marriages:
Logan Killicks: Represents security at the expense of love and soul.
Joe Starks: Represents social status and power, but treats Janie as a
possession.
Tea Cake: Represents the "pear tree" ideal—a relationship based on
mutual respect, play, and spiritual connection.
Love vs. Independence
Zora Neale Hurston explores the tension between romantic love and
the need for a woman to belong to herself. Janie’s grandmother, Nanny,
believes Black women are the "mules of the world" and thus needs a
man for protection. Janie rejects this, discovering that true love should
not require the erasure of her own personality.
Even with Tea Cake, whom she loves deeply, Janie must navigate his
flaws and the eventual choice during the hurricane that results in her
survival at the cost of his life. This tragic climax reinforces the idea that
her ultimate peace comes from within her own soul, not just through
her partner.
Nature and the Divine
The title of the novel refers to the moment during the hurricane when
the characters realize their powerlessness against the forces of nature.
Nature is depicted as both a source of erotic awakening (the pear tree)
and a terrifying, indifferent power (the hurricane).
The Gaze: "They sat in the company of the thousands who were some
place else... They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were
watching God." This suggests that human struggle, race, and social
hierarchies are secondary to the ultimate power of the universe and the
divine, which demands that individuals find their own place in the
world.
