‘Iolani offers a multitude of College Board’s Advanced Placement courses in many academic areas, including English,
History, Computer, Math, Performing and Visual Arts, Research, Science, and World Languages. These courses, part of an
international program recognized by thousands of schools and colleges, present outstanding secondary school students
with college-level curriculum. Although colleges differ in how they recognize AP scores, students who succeed on AP
examinations and digital portfolio reviews may earn college credit based on their test performance, or be allowed to
skip introductory courses and move directly into upper-level classes. Selective colleges strongly encourage students to
challenge themselves. Taking AP courses is one way to do so.
Advanced Placement work, however, is not for everyone; for many students, the normal pace of ‘Iolani School is
sufficiently challenging. Under no circumstances should a student’s grounding in the fundamentals be compromised in
order to take an AP course. Students enrolled in any AP courses must take the AP end-of-course examination or submit
a digital portfolio; failure to do so without prior administrative approval will result in a failure for the course. AP teachers
will assist students with myAP registration in the fall. The Business Office will bill student accounts for their associated
exam fee(s) in the spring.
Registering for the Exam Portion:
• Students should speak to their grade level counselor before registering for any AP exam. Students who wish to
retake an exam, may not request tutoring assistance from ‘Iolani faculty.
• If you are enrolled in an AP Course at ‘Iolani, you are required to take the respective AP exam. An exam has already
been ordered for students in these classes and your student account will be billed the AP exam fee ($100 for most
courses, $148 for AP Capstone courses). Students will register using their College Board account within the first
week of classes.
• Juniors and seniors are welcome to take the AP English Language and Composition exam, without a formal
course, though the spring workshops for those registered is highly recommended. Students must sign up with Mr.
Andrews, Test Prep Coordinator, in the fall for their exam ($100) to be ordered.
• ‘Iolani does not administer AP testing for those not regularly enrolled.
Scoring:
Scores are between 1 and 5. Based on your score, a college may opt to give you college credit, skip a preliminary course,
or both. Usually scores of 3+ are considered “passable”, however it is the discretion of the individual university to decide.
Reporting of Scores:
In general, you should send your scores no later than July after you graduate, but our college counselors will assist in this
process. Two options:
• Free Mailing: You must sign in to My AP (onto your College Board account) to indicate the college, university, or
scholarship organization that you want to receive your one free score. You have until the June 20th deadline to use
your free score mailing. This option is ideal for Seniors who have already decided on a particular university.
• Score Choice: If you decide to wait until after the test or to send to more than one college, you can send your scores
online for a $15 fee. Some colleges will not accept AP scores after you have arrived on campus as a freshman. This
option is ideal for students who have not decided on a particular university.

AP Scholar with Honors: Granted to students who
receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP

who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all
AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or
more of these exams.
AP International Diploma: Granted to students who
receive 3 or higher on five or more AP Exams and
plans to attend a university outside of the United
