Strat egies to help you prep are for the
A C T
9
Get familiar with the cont ent of th e
sections.
Review the inf ormation in this document.
Note whic h cont ent areas mak e up a large
proportion of the sections. The topics included
in each c ontent area ar e examples of possible
topics; the y do not include all possibilities.
9
Update y our knowledge and skills in the
cont ent areas.
Review c ontent ar eas that you hav e studied but
that are not f resh in your mind. Ref resh y our
knowledge in the c ontent ar eas that make up
large portions of the test.

Study cont ent areas you ar e not familiar with.
If some cont ent areas of the A C T are unf amiliar
to y ou, consider taking coursew ork in those
are as before y ou take the test.

Sections

Pace y oursel f.
It is important that you hav e enough time to
re ad the passages/ questions and figure out
your r esponses. For e a ch section, subtract
the number of minutes y ou estimate you will
spend skimming the passages or re a ding the
information pr ovided, then divide the total
number of remaining minut es allowed by
the number of questions to det ermine the
estimated time y ou should spen d on each
question. If possible, spend less time on each
question and use the remaining time allow ed
for a section to r eview your w ork and return to
the questions in that section that were most
difficult for you.
The time limits set for eac h section give
nearly e veryone enough time to finish all the
questions.
How ever, y ou will want t o pace yourself to a void
spending too much time on one passage or
puzzling ov er an answer t o a specific problem.
If you don’t k now ho w to w ork t ow ard an
answer t o a question, it is a better str ategy to
guess, flag the question, and then move on t o
other questions that you kno w how to do . If
there is time, you can c ome back to the flagged
questions.
9
Read the directions carefully .
Before y ou begin each section, re ad the
directions carefully . This sh ould occur befor e
you tak e the test so that you do not use t estin g
time.
y
The English, reading, and scienc e sections
ask for the best answ er. Read and consider
all of the answer c h oices and choose the
answer that best r esponds to the question.
y
The mathematics section asks for the
corr ect answer . Y ou may want to w ork out
the answer y ou feel is correct and look for
it among the choices given. If y our answer
is not among the choices pro vided, reread
the question and consider all the answ er
choices.
9
Read each question car efully .
Y ou need to understand exactly what e ach
question asks. Some questions will r equire y ou
to go thr ough several st eps to find the correct
or best answ er, while others can be answ ered
more quickly .
9
Answer the eas y questions first .
A good strat egy is to ans wer the e asy questions
and skip the questions you find difficult. After
answer ing th e eas y questions, go back and
answer the mor e difficult questions if you have
time.
9
Use logic on more difficult questions.
When you r eturn to the mor e difficult
questions, try to use logic to eliminat e incorrect
answer s. Comp are the answ er choices to
each other and not e how they differ. Suc h
differenc es may pro vide clues as to what the
question requir es. Eliminate as man y incorrect
answer s as you can, then mak e an educated
guess f rom the remaining answ ers.
9
Answer e very question.
Y our scores in the sections will be based only
on the number of questions that you answ er
corr ectly; there is no penalty for guessing. Try t o
answer e very question within the time allowed
for eac h sec tion.
