The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is a novel that is about a young Andalusian shepherd
boy named Santiago who discovers that he has a personal legend to pursue. The main
characters besides Santiago in the novel are Melchizedek, The Crystal Merchant, The Camel
Driver, Fatima, and The Alchemist. Santiago meets Melchizedek in a town called Tarifa.
Melchizedek is the King of Salem, who motivated Santiago to look more into his personal
legend. The Crystal Merchant is someone who Santiago works with after he gets robbed in
Tangier. The Crystal Merchant teaches Santiago to cleanse his mind whenever he has
negative thoughts because he wants Santiago to not get held back on his journey. Santiago
met The Camel Driver when he was with the caravan. The Camel Driver helps Santiago
avoid fear when pursuing his personal legend. Santiago meets Fatima at an oasis in the desert.
Fatima provided support on the journey Santiago was embarking on when she understood
what a personal legend was. Santiago also meets The Alchemist at an oasis in the desert. The
Alchemist teaches Santiago important lessons that help him finally find his personal legend.
I thought that the novel was amazing. I liked how Santiago met so many characters
who helped him with his journey. The novel made me feel motivated and inspired because it
showed that Santiago faced many challenges during his journey. Though, these challenges
didn’t stop him because he was determined to reach his personal legend. One thing that
surprised me about this novel was the ending.
I would recommend this novel because it encourages people to never give up on their
journey. I think people who like motivational novels would like this.
