The Outsiders Novel by SE Hinton Chapter 7-9

This document is Chapters 7 through 9 of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, covering a series of emotionally intense and action-packed events following the church fire. Chapter 7 opens at the hospital where Ponyboy, Darry, and Sodapop await news about Johnny and Dally — the doctor reveals that Dally will recover but Johnny is in critical condition with a broken back and severe burns, possibly facing paralysis for life. The boys return home to find reporters and police, and Ponyboy learns from the newspaper that he and Johnny are being hailed as heroes, but also that he must appear in juvenile court and risks being separated from his brothers. Chapter 8 follows Ponyboy and Two-Bit’s visit to a gravely ill Johnny in the hospital, where Johnny expresses his fear of dying young and his refusal to see his uncaring mother, before they visit Dally who pressures Two-Bit into giving him his prized switchblade so he can fight in the rumble; Ponyboy also has a bittersweet encounter with Cherry Valance, who cannot bring herself to visit Johnny but confirms the upcoming rumble will be fair. Chapter 9 depicts the night of the big rumble between the greasers and the Socs, which the greasers ultimately win, but immediately after the victory Dally rushes Ponyboy to the hospital where they arrive just in time to witness Johnny’s death — his final whispered words to Ponyboy being “Stay gold” — leaving Dally utterly devastated and Ponyboy in a state of shock and grief.
