Twenty years ago, I asked Michael Cembalest if he would start sharing his insights from our daily

eting with our clients. At the time, he worried that his unvarnished take on markets and
the policies driving global trends would not conform to traditional economic publications. Who
would have ever imagined that two decades later, it would grow to become one of the most widely
respected pieces of thought leadership in our industry—“required reading,” as Jamie Dimon puts it.
In celebrating this 20-year milestone, we chose 30 of Michael’s most memorable exhibits, each
offering a window into how far we’ve come—and how far ahead he’s always been looking. Two
decades ago, there were no smartphones, no ridesharing, no social video platforms. The Federal
Reserve’s balance sheet stood at $870 billion—just a fraction of today’s $7 trillion—and the S&P 500
hovered around 1,250, compared to over 5,950 now. Today, artificial intelligence and generative
models are accelerating everything from drug discovery to financial modeling, to rewiring work
in general. And yet, many of the same forces remain at the heart of investment decision making—
capital costs, disruptive innovation and the ever-present challenge of separating signal from noise.
Through it all, Eye on the Market has remained one of the most rigorous sources of analysis in
our industry, marked by clarity, intellectual honesty and a deep respect for the sophistication of
our clients.

In 2005, we launched Eye on the Market to share our views on markets,
investments, economics, politics, science, energy and other topics with
our clients. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Eye on the Market, so
I selected thirty of the more memorable topics for this retrospective.
Many topics are as relevant to the future as they were to the past: investing
during recessions and other crises, how equity markets tend to bottom
well before economic indicators do, the resilience of modern economies to
wars and natural disasters, painful choices regarding the rise in the Federal
debt, the underperformance of Europe, expanding capabilities of artificial
intelligence models, private equity performance vs public markets, the real
pace of the energy transition, lingering risks of unrealized losses on US bank
balance sheets due to rising interest rates, the US-China relationship and the
bet of the century by hyperscalers on AI infrastructure. In aggregate, they
represent some of the most important lessons I’ve learned after 35+ years
at J.P. Morgan. At the end, a personal time capsule on how I joined Asset
Management back in 1998 from another part of J.P. Morgan.
I hope you enjoy reading this compilation. I would like to thank Mary and
Jamie for their support since some of the views expressed went against the
grain. There are over 4,500 pages in the Eye on the Market archives, and
only twice in 20 years was a piece shelved due to its content.
